Insure.com, a company that provides insurance information to consumers, and Hagerty Insurance have listed some of the most dangerous foods a driver can eat while driving. What makes the foods so dangerous? Generally, if they are hot, messy or sticky, they make the list because of their ability to potentially distract or hinder a driver's response time.
Hagerty began looking more closely at the issue of eating and driving after a Department of Motor Vehicles check on an insurance applicant turned up an order against anything edible within his reach while driving. The man apparently had several previous accidents related to food on his driving record.
According to the companies, coffee is the top offender because of its tendency to spill. Other foods, such as tacos, hamburgers, and cream-filled donuts, have the ability to distract because of the mess they can make in a driver's lap, while barbecued foods and chocolate can make handling the steering wheel difficult because of finger residue.
