"The state of Florida trusted this private company to help Floridians access crash reports to assist them with insurance claims and other important matters that can arise following an automobile accident," Florida's attorney general said.

"We feel like we're detectives, and our job is to go to the crime scene and figure out what happened, follow the money and try and help the victims as best we can. It's often a whodunnit," one plaintiffs attorney said.

A Florida judge initially determined that State Farm's lawyers were guilty of misconduct. An appeals court has reversed that decision.

"As she rounds the corner he did not see her in the darkness and, unfortunately, ran her over," said Miami attorney Alexander Perkins.
