Forbes Advisor recently reviewed and ranked home insurers based on rates, complaints, coverage options and other factors. Details the editors considered included: |
- Home insurance rates (50% of score): This was based on average rates for homes with dwelling coverage of $200,000, $350,000, $500,00 and $750,000.
- Complaints (20% of score): The team looked at complaints against the insurer that were upheld by state insurance departments.
- Extended and/or guaranteed replacement cost coverage (20% of score): Home insurers received extra points if they offered extra dwelling coverage, an important feature in the event of a large disaster.
- Banned dog lists (10% of score): Banned dog breed lists can cause homeowners to be ineligible for coverage.
Forbes Advisor also found the average cost for a home insurance policy in the United States is $1,678 per year for $350,000 dwelling coverage. However, costs depend on a number of different factors and vary based on location, amount of coverage, deductible, age of home and more.
