The cost of auto insurance climbed by 63.8% from 2014 to 2023, with rates increasing 20.6% in the 12-month period that ended in January 2024, Forbes Advisor reports. This trend is likely to continue through the rest 2024, with Insurify projecting drivers will see an average 22% increase in the cost of their auto policy by the year's end. As of June 2024, they report the average U.S. driver pays just over $2,300 each year for full coverage. The predicted increase would bump that average to $2,469 annually. These increased rates are the result of compounding factors, including inflation, higher medical bills, supply chain issues, and increased vehicle and repair costs, which all lead to larger claim payouts from insurers. The Insurance Information Institute reports that 2022 data showed the average property damage auto liability claim was $5,213. The average cost for a bodily injury liability claim was $24,211, with an average collision claim of $5,992 and average comprehensive claim of $2,738. These costs lead to a record $242.9 billion in claims paid by auto insurers in 2022. As with insurance premiums, auto claims costs can vary greatly depending on where an insured lives. In the slideshow above, we'll look at the ten states that pay the highest per capita in insurance claims for car accidents, according to data from Dolman Law Group.
