As the world's premier athletic event, the Olympic Games tend to be a joyous and celebratory affair.

However, the sheer scope and scale of the Games leave them open to the unexpected, and the history of the Olympics is not without violence. Two such well-known episodes were the 1972 targeting of the Israeli Olympic team by Palestinian militants in Munich, and the 1996 Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, which was carried out by a single deranged individual.
