As the world's premier athletic event, the Olympic Games tend to be a joyous and celebratory affair.

However, the sheer scope and scale of the Games leave them open to the unexpected, and the history of the Olympics is not without violence. Two such well-known episodes were the 1972 targeting of the Israeli Olympic team by Palestinian militants in Munich, and the 1996 Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, which was carried out by a single deranged individual.

In this episode of Insurance Speak, Chloe Gordge, head of Markel's terrorism portfolio in London, talks about the 2024 Summer Olympics, which will get underway in Paris later this month. Gordge highlights the unique challenge of countering violence during the Olympics in Paris. The event is expected to draw millions of athletes, supporters and spectators to densely-populated, historic, urban settings including the Eiffel Tower, where a temporary outdoor stadium will host beach volleyball as well as the men's paralympic blind football contests, or the Château de Versailles, which will serve as a backdrop for Olympic marathons.
