Aon recently announced the property and casualty insurers who made it to the 2024 Ward's Top 50. This annual recognition honors companies that have demonstrated superior performance over the last five years. This is the 34th year for the Ward's 50, which analyzes the performance of nearly 3,000 P&C insurance companies that are domiciled in the United States. The analysis is based on publicly available data which is used to determine the companies' financial performance over a five-year period. This serves as a benchmark to compare the performance of the Top 50 as a group with the rest of the industry. To be selected, companies must meet the following criteria:

  • Surplus and premiums of at least $50 million for each of the five analyzed years;
  • Net income in at least four of the last five years;
  • Risk-based capital ratio of at least 100% for each of the last five years;
  • Compound annual growth in premiums between -10% and +40%;
  • Rank in the top 10% of peer the business mix benchmark group; and
  • Must pass Ward's evaluation of company operations.

Companies are measured and ranked in performance based on their:

  • Five-year average return on average equity;
  • Five-year average return on average assets;
  • Five-year average return on total revenue;
  • Five-year growth in net premiums written
  • Five-year growth in surplus; and
  • Five –year average combined ratio.

The slideshow above illustrates the P&C insurers who made the 2024 Ward's Top 50 list. There are no rankings within the top 50, so the companies are presented in alphabetical order.
