Dog bite and injury claims exceeded $1 billion in 2023

Claims costs to settle dog bite and dog-related injuries surpassed $1.1 billion in 2023, which saw a total of 19,062 dog bite and related injury claims, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Insurance Information Institute and State Farm.

In 2023, the number of dog-related claims was up 8% compared with the year prior and 110% compared with the past decade. Although the number of claims was up, the cost per claim declined around 9% and settled at an average of $58,545 per incident.

The group of insurance and veterinary stakeholders are highlighting the stat during Dog Bite Prevention Week, which runs until April 13, 2024.

Although dog bite incidents are becoming more frequent, AVMA President Dr. Rena Carlson noted most are preventable.

“By taking steps to train and properly socialize our dogs, and educate ourselves and loved ones on dog bite prevention, we can help reduce bites and keep dogs in loving homes, where they belong,” Carlson said in a release.

The AVMA noted that animals bite for many reasons and that any dog, even those that are well trained, can bite. To help prevent incidents of dog bites, the veterinary organization recommends the following:
