On the road to excellence: Workers' comp insights from the WCI

Andrew Sabolic of the WCI discusses the organization’s work and what makes an excellent workplace safety program.

Transparent communication, a willingness to new ideas and the ability to adapt to changing situations are critical components of top-flight workers’ comp risk management programs, according to Andrew Sabolic, executive director of the Workers’ Compensation Institute (WCI).

“With communication, you are emphasizing to the employee that you are there to protect them and take care of them while they’re at work,” Sabolic said in a recent interview with PropertyCasualty360.com. “For me, that’s the most important thing an employer can do.”

In addition to its education, networking and philanthropic work, the WCI teams with PropertyCasualty360.com each year to present the Workers’ Comp Risk Management Award for Excellence, which recognizes risk managers or someone who works in a risk management department of a U.S. company or organization and is responsible, at least in part, for the firm’s workers’ comp program. The awards are sponsored by Sedgwick and Safety National.

These awards recognize people who are making a positive impact on their company’s culture, behavior and employees, Sabolic said, adding past award recipients have openly shared their winning strategies to help elevate other risk management and safety programs. Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2024 Workers’ Comp Risk Management Award for Excellence. While carriers and brokers are not directly eligible for the award, they should encourage clients and policyholders to apply.

Winning programs will be recognized at the WCI’s 78th Annual Workers’ Compensation Institute Educational Conference and 35th Safety & Health Conference, which will take place Aug. 18-21, 2024, at the Orlando World Center Marriott. Award recipients will receive complimentary registration for the event and one night of accommodations.

In this episode of the Insurance Speak podcast, Sabolic also talks about his career path, the WCI’s work and where he sees the organization heading.
