Transparent communication, a willingness to new ideas and the ability to adapt to changing situations are critical components of top-flight workers' comp risk management programs, according to Andrew Sabolic, executive director of the Workers' Compensation Institute (WCI).

"With communication, you are emphasizing to the employee that you are there to protect them and take care of them while they're at work," Sabolic said in a recent interview with PropertyCasualty360.com. "For me, that's the most important thing an employer can do."

In addition to its education, networking and philanthropic work, the WCI teams with PropertyCasualty360.com each year to present the Workers' Comp Risk Management Award for Excellence, which recognizes risk managers or someone who works in a risk management department of a U.S. company or organization and is responsible, at least in part, for the firm's workers' comp program. The awards are sponsored by Sedgwick and Safety National.
