L.A. burglaries highlight smart-home vulnerability

The LAPD recommends such low-tech tactics as security bars and watchful neighbors to counter tech-savvy burglars.

Burglars in Los Angeles have recently capitalized on a weakness linked to smart-home security systems in order to enter residences in the city’s Wilshire neighborhood undetected and steal jewelry, cash and other valuables, according to a community alert from the city’s police department.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Wilshire Division reported on March 4, 2024 that a crew of individuals is using illegal Wi-Fi jammers to interrupt internet-based security alarms and cameras. Once these smart-home security systems are disabled, masked thieves access residences using second-story balconies. Police said this particular team is savvy enough to enlist a lookout person and getaway car to complete the heists.
