When it comes to holiday traffic deaths, Labor Day is the deadliest holiday period during the summer, according to auto app provider Jerry, which reported the end-of-summer celebration is the holiday period with the second most roadway deaths. Thanksgiving sees the most fatal traffic accidents among all of the holidays. From 2012-2021, the number of people killed in traffic accidents over Labor Day weekend increased 38%, according to Jerry. On average, 447 people die in auto accidents over during the holiday period each year. Saturdays historically have seen the most roadway deaths, according to Jerry. From 2012-2021, there was a total of 1,289 roadway deaths on Saturdays over Labor Day weekend. In comparison, Sundays saw 1,199 deaths and Labor Day itself saw 1,037 during the same period. However, Jerry reported that Fridays at 9 p.m. was the deadliest hour during the holiday weekend. Saturdays at 2 a.m. was the second deadliest time slot during the holiday. Jerry also reported that three-fourths of drivers involved in fatal crashes over Labor Day weekend were men, and at least one driver tested positive for alcohol in 62% of accidents when a test was administered. Rural areas see the nearly half of crashes during the holiday weekend, with nearly 70% involving a vehicle leaving the road. In comparison, a vehicle leaves the roadway in 41% of crashes in non-rural area. When it comes to Labor Day weekend accidents in non-rural areas, 1 in 4 involve a pedestrian, according to Jerry, which reported that crashes involving pedestrians increased 69% from 2012-2021.
