In January, the insurance brokerage, HUB International, became aware of a data breach when they identified unusual activity within their network. After an initial search, the brokerage discovered various documents have been copied without permission. However, at the time, the victims were not listed.

HUB launched a full forensic investigation into the stolen documents and then released a notice confirming the initial analysis came to a close July 27. The process of notifying the affected parties began when the initial search ended.

“We determined that the data contains information related to current and former employees, individuals for whom Hub places insurance policies, and individuals related to insurance carriers and employers to whom Hub provides services,” the notice said.

The information that was compromised in the data breach includes, but is not limited to, Social Security numbers, ID and passport numbers, bank account information, as well as health insurance and medical information. The notice revealed that most of the data breach affected U.S. enterprises, but some information belonged to Canadians.

A further search is being conducted. HUB is putting greater security measures into action as well as offering credit monitoring services for the affected parties and a call center for questions and support.

MOVEit, a file transfer software company, also recently experienced a data breach that compromised data at more than 600 organizations worldwide, including TD Ameritrade, Fidelity, and 30 colleges.
