Street racing is among the most severe violations a driver can commit, according to Insurify.com, which noted racing can count for more than twice as many points against a driving record as a minor speeding citation in most states. Additionally, getting a citation for street racing can cause an auto insurance premium to increase by as much as 73%, on average. Speeding can cause auto insurance rates to increase an average of 23%, according to The Zebra. Nationally, 3.48 per 100,000 drivers have a citation for street racing, Insurify reported. which noted penalties range widely by state, ranging from $20 to as much as $2,500 and jail time. The amount of street racing a state sees is directly correlated to its population density with less dense areas seeing more activity and more heavily populated areas seeing fewer street races. Insurify noted, and as was seen during the pandemic, emptier roads are more attractive to street racers. Street racing, like a lot of other dangerous driving habits, saw an uptick during the pandemic. However, Insurify noted that street races are still a relatively rare occurrence in the U.S., particularly when compared to acts of speeding.
