For medical professionals, liability coverage is absolutely critical as the American Medical Association (AMA) reported nearly half of physicians 55 and older have been sued at some point in their careers. "Even the most highly qualified and competent physicians in the U.S. may face a medical liability claim in their careers," AMA President Jack Resneck Jr., MD, said in a release. "All medical care comes with risks, yet physicians are willing to perform high-risk procedures that offer hope of relief from debilitating symptoms or life-threatening conditions." Medical malpractice insurance comes in a variety of packages, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Coverage might include: |
- An individual or group policy purchased from a traditional private insurer.
- An individual or group policy obtained through a medical risk retention group, a mutual organization of medical professionals organized to provide liability insurance.
- Coverage provided as part of a policy held by an employer, such as a hospital.
Resneck said that when physicians are sued, two-thirds of civil liability claims are dropped, dismissed or withdrawn without a finding of fault. "When claims proceed to trial and are decided by a verdict, the defendants prevail in nearly 9 out 10 cases," he said.
