If you're in an area that is new to you, it's always a good idea to take along a companion who is more familiar with the environment and landscape.
• Be in good physical condition, and set a comfortable pace as you hike. If you are in a group, it is important to cater to the weakest member to ensure no one is left behind on your journey.
• Think about your footing when you are near cliffs, and stay on developed trails. Don't rely on trees or bushes to catch you if you fall near a ledge.
• Wear appropriate clothing for the location and season.
• Keep your equipment in good working order.
• Keep an eye on weather forecasts so you aren't caught off-guard by sudden changes.
• Learn basic first aid in case of any injuries or medical emergencies.
• Make camp before it gets dark. Travelling at night can lead to more accidents from falls.
• Watch out for slippery areas.
• Stay away from alcohol and other intoxicating substances when you're near cliffs.
• Don't just drink any water you find, as it could contain water-borne parasites. Pack your own water or purify any you find with a chemical treatment.
