Nevada insurance agents, producers targeted in phishing scam
The scam emails claim the agents may have their licenses revoked unless they pay an 'amendment fee.'
The Nevada Division of Insurance is warning agents and producers in the state to be on the watch for phishing emails targeting insurance professionals and claiming their licenses might be revoked if an “amendment fee” isn’t paid via a link embedded in the email.
The emails, see an example below, are sent from INSURANCE LICENSING donotreply@nevadalicense.us with the subject line: “Nevada Division of Insurance AMENDMENT FEE,” according to the state’s insurance department. If you received a suspicious email, do not click on the links and delete it immediately.
The Nevada Division of Insurance reported all official Division of Insurance Licensing emails are sent from nevada.licensing@doi.nv.gov or renewal.desk@doi.nv.gov. Any other emails claiming to be from the agency or another insurance division should be considered fraudulent and deleted.
If you have received this email or have any questions, the insurance department recommends contacting its licensing section directly at (775) 687-0700 (press option 2) or via email at nevada.licensing@doi.nv.gov.
For businesses to protect against these types of threats, Anthony Dolce of The Hartford recommends the following steps:
- Develop an electronic funds transfer policy.
- Check the actual sender domain in emails.
- Protect email domains and authenticate emails.
- Use multifactor authentication.
- Create phishing training and awareness programs.
