The term "starter job" may conjure images of new college graduates searching for the first step on the path of their chosen career, but young adults certainly aren't the only ones in the workforce looking to get their foot in the door somewhere new. More than 47 million workers voluntarily left their jobs in 2021 in what is widely known as the "Great Resignation," with the quit rate reaching a 20-year high in November 2021, according to the U.S. Department of Labor statistics. Data from Pew Research shows the top reasons U.S. workers cited for leaving their jobs during this mass exodus included low pay, no opportunity for advancement, feeling disrespected at work, childcare issues and not having enough flexibility with the hours they worked. However, there is a reason many choose to refer to this shift in the workforce as the "Great Reshuffle." Of the adults who quit a job in 2021, 53% told Pew they had changed their field of work or occupation – with 45% of those who made a career change being age 30 or older. A Newsweek survey of job starters – those who had working experience of five years or less – looked at which companies (with at least 1,000 employees) provide the most value to their greenest employees. In the slideshow above, we'll look at the seven companies in the property and casualty insurance industry that made Newsweek's list of "America's Greatest Workplaces for Job Starters in 2023."
