Georgia insurance department gets new fraud-fighting tool

The system will also handle complaints against public adjusters, claims of theft by conversion and identity theft.

Georgia’s Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner is getting a new tool to combat insurance fraud with the launch of a portal that collects reports of suspected fraud, the state’s insurance department reported.

In addition to insurance fraud, the portal also collects reports on indemnity theft, criminal acts by public adjusters and theft by conversion, which the department defines as “theft of money and/or materials that were intended to pay for insurance premiums, contractor work, etc. related to an insurance policy and/or claim.” In instances where the suspect is unknown, the agency urges people to call them directly

Complaints submitted to the portal will be reviewed by the agency’s criminal investigation division, and if further investigation is required the case will move to a special agent for investigation. Those submitting complaints will receive updates on if the report was rejected, approved or if more information is needed.

“Citizens, insurance companies, and law enforcement agencies can now report suspected acts of criminal insurance fraud easier than ever before using our new online complaint portal,” Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner King, said in a release. “The Coplogic Desk Officer Reporting System through LexisNexis offers a streamlined process for filing a complaint directly to our office.”

The Desk Officer Reporting System, developed to help law enforcement better handle minor incidents and accidents, is an off-the-shelf system that automatically interfaces information from community members with a records management system, according to LexisNexis.
