If you're looking to relocate, considering prospects that would involve international relocation can feel intimidating, but broadening your search can often offer a broader scope of opportunity. However, big moves – especially ones that take you to a new country – present a unique set of challenges that go beyond just hiring a moving company, and a solid plan is imperative. In their "ultimate moving abroad checklist," Expatica – which provides resources and information for expats around the world – offers the following tips for those planning an international move.

Learn your new country's rules

Of course, every country has a unique set of laws and regulations, and it's important to do plenty of research while planning an international move to ensure you're well-aware of these rules before you leave. You should be especially aware of rules regarding travel documents, vaccines (for both humans and pets), import taxes and insurance.

Figure out your finances

What is the cost of living where you're moving? What is the average pay? Are there many jobs? These are all things to consider, as it's important to know ahead of time whether you can even afford to live in your country of choice. Factors like not speaking the local language(s) or just being an expat in general can make it tough to find work in some job markets, so look into how welcoming the country is to immigrant workers or if many are unemployed.

Think about your health

If you take any medications, it's possible there could be an interruption in your ability to obtain your prescriptions when you first arrive in a new country. As such, it may be a good idea to speak to your current doctor about stocking up to prepare for that possible delay. You'll also need to research the health insurance system/ options in your new location so you're prepared to obtain coverage as quickly as you can.

Consider renting

While many may hope to purchase a home when they move abroad, renting can often be the easiest option for those relocating. Even if the rental is only short-term, it's something to consider as it allows you time to get your bearings in the local area before committing to a home. In the slideshow above, we explore some of the top global cities to consider if you're hoping to relocate, according to money.co.uk.
