- Speeding was a factor in roughly one out of three traffic fatalities in 2020, according to the National Safety Council.
- That added up to 11,258 individuals killed by speeding in 2020, or an average of more than 30 people per day, the NSC reports.
- Speeding-related deaths increased 17% from 2019 to 2020.
Why do most people speed?
Those prone to fast driving report an impatience with traffic and an urgency to arrive at their destination as top reasons for the behavior. Speeding is also considered a bad habit that's reinforced by popular culture as well as individual drivers who have historically gotten away with repeated fast-driving incidents. Automobile make and model may also play a role in a driver's tendency to speed, Insurify reported in its recent study of the car brands most frequently associated with speeding tickets in 2022. The insurance-shopping comparison site looked at 4.6 million car insurance applications to identify the five automobile brands with the most speeding tickets in 2022. The slideshow above highlights Insurify's findings. Here's what else insurance professionals should know about the speeding habit:
- An average of 9.36% of drivers across the U.S. have at least one speeding violation on record, Insurify says.
- The cars most often associated with speeding tickets are all high-end, high-performance vehicles.
