Each year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announces the vehicles that qualify for their Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ award. These awards have been around since 2006 and 2013, respectively, and are given to vehicles that rate the highest for safety within size categories for a given year. In 2022, in order to qualify as a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must have earned a rating of "good" in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests; an "advanced" or "superior" rating for available front crash prevention for both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations; and have headlights available that rate as "acceptable" or "good." Standards are the same for the Top Safety Pick+ rating, except headlights that rate as "good" or "acceptable" must be standard on the vehicle. The 2021 IIHS top-rated small SUVs included the 2021-22 Chevrolet Trailblazer, 2021-22 Ford Bronco Sport, 2022 Hyundai Tucson and 2021 Mazda CX-3. In the above slideshow, we take a look at the ten highest rated Small SUVs for 2022, according to IIHS ratings.
