Understanding how to successfully investigate insurance claims involving cannabis-touching businesses is the focus of the next installment in the Cannabis Insurance Coverage Specialist (CICS) designation launched last year by The National Underwriter Company, an ALM business. It is the third module following the introduction of the Cannabis 101 course and Managing the Risks of Cannabis-touching Entities.

Understanding and Handling Insurance Claims provides adjusters, brokers, agents and other professionals involved with cannabis-related businesses critical insights to help them understand what may or may not be covered in the event of an insured loss.

The course provides a general overview of claims for those unfamiliar with the process before taking an in-depth look at cannabis-specific claims related to auto, commercial general liability, workers’ compensation, product liability and other areas. It also addresses the ethics of handling cannabis claims as well as subrogation opportunities for insurers.

Chantal Roberts of CMR Consulting is the author and subject matter expert for the module. “National Underwriter’s cannabis claims module is the bedrock for this emerging market,” she shares. “The deep dive into policy language prompts insurers and agents to carefully consider what is and is not covered. Without this fundamental, vital knowledge, insurance professionals would be unable to properly serve the cannabis and cannabis-touching communities.”

While created primarily for insurance professionals, the CICS designation provides valuable information for entities operating in every aspect of the cannabis industry, from grow operations to manufacturers and dispensaries, as well as those advising cannabis-touching businesses.

The CICS designation comprises six courses:  a general overview of the cannabis industry, as well as a more in-depth look at issues involving risk management, real estate, product liability and claims, medical and health concerns, including workers’ comp and employment law, and issues for business advisors such as financial services professionals and attorneys.
