The scary and costly truth is that most people who get behind the wheel of an automobile will eventually experience an accident. Esurance has reported that more than seven out of 10 of all drivers have crashed, and the longer someone drives, the more likely they are to file an auto accident claim. Not all car, truck and motorcycle accidents inflict an equal amount of damage, however. About a third of crashes are rear-end collisions, which happen when one driver hits a stopped vehicle, according to Forbes Advisor and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. And about 20% of accidents occur when a moving vehicle collides with a stationary object such a pole or parked car. As for the cost of a crash, vehicle make and model is one indicator of how pricy such an incident can be. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Highway Loss Data Institute recently looked at auto accident costs by vehicle make and model. The slideshow above illustrates the 10 vehicles with the highest collision losses, along with how much more than the average accident price a crash in one of these vehicles is likely to cost, according to the IIHS. These statistics were compiled to help consumers understand how much more insurance may cost for vehicles associated with high-loss accidents. See also: |
