Triple-I, IMPACT team up for HBCU recruitment initiative
The campaign coincides with the beginning of February, which is both Black History Month and Insurance Careers Month.
The Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) and the HBCU I.M.P.A.C.T. Initiative (IMPACT) are partnering for a campaign aimed at recruiting students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to the insurance industry.
The campaign coincides with the beginning of February, which is both Black History Month and Insurance Careers Month.
“The war for talent in our industry is indeed real, but it is also an extremely exciting time of corporate transformation and technological advancement,” Sean Kevelighan, CEO, Triple-I, said in a press release about the partnership. “We are thrilled to be a part of this dynamic program to help young and diverse talent discover the benefits and opportunities available through insurance careers.”
IMPACT, which stands for Insurance Mentoring Program Advance Career Track, seeks to fill the talent gap prevalent in the industry among underrepresented groups, especially Black professionals. The industry has long struggled to recruit and retain Black talent and, according to a study conducted by the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America, in 2018 only 2% of established agencies had at least one African American principal.
“We are going around like evangelists, letting the next generation of Black talent know that insurance is a place where you can build a career, learn skills that are transferable and you can make a lot of money,” Rebekah Ratliff, mediator/arbitrator, founder of CCM Consulting Associates, LLC and HBCU IMPACT co-founder said the press release. “For some disciplines, industry opportunities begin even before college. Not all rising stars will decide to go to college. We are developing programming to address the hidden Black talent in that demographic, as well.”
To kick off the campaign, Triple-I produced and released a video series called “Insuring Success,” which is available on their YouTube channel, and HBCU launched a new website.
“Ultimately, we want to achieve an increased representation of Black talent in the industry– not just at the entry level, but we are also looking to groom our next Black executives,” Ngozi Nnaji, founder of Ako Insurance Consulting, LLC and Ako Brokerage Services, LLC and an HBCU IMPACT co-founder, said in the release. “HBCU IMPACT is proud to join forces with Triple-I to spread the word among Black students that insurance is the place to be for successful, fulfilling careers.”
