Few things can douse the holiday spirit faster than an accident or injury. But unfortunately, scaling ladders to hang twinkle lights or strolling through the neighborhood to ogle decorations can become bah-humbug experiences without the proper precautions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that accidents at home such as slipping from a roof or tripping on stairs are common during the holidays. Home fires also are a concern, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which has found the danger of holiday tree and candle fires to be acute enough to issue a seasonal alert about these hazards. Common insurance claims to arise during the winter holidays include those related to burglaries, house fires, ice dams, frozen pipes, electrical hazards, falls and identity theft as a result of brisk online shopping.
