Our Twitter chat promises sweet tweets & helpful tricks to combat cyber threats
If you’ve been having nightmares about paranormal-ware activity, fear no more.
October is not only the time for Halloween festivities — it’s also National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Even more so than ghosts and ghouls, it’s cyber threats that make many of us take the words of Geena Davis in The Fly to heart: “Be afraid. Be very afraid.”
That fear is not unsubstantiated: According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, the number of data-compromise victims in the third quarter of this year exceeded the total number of victims from the past two quarters combined — even though the overall number of data breach incidents declined.
“While the total number of data breaches dropped slightly in Q3, we are only 238 data breaches away from tying the all-time record for data compromises in a single year,” Eva Velasquez, president and CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center, said in a press release. “It’s also interesting to note that the 1,111 data breaches from cyberattacks so far this year exceed the total number of data compromises from all causes in 2020. Everyone needs to continue to practice good cyber hygiene to protect themselves and their loved ones as these crimes continue to increase.”
