Following a year most will care to forget, Americans are aiming to get back out there with nearly 40% planning or having booked an international trip, with more than 70% seeking an “adventurous” outdoor activity. However, these plans aren’t without considering the risks, as 72% have looked into or purchased travel insurance.

This new research comes from battleface Travel Insurance, which reported younger Americans are more likely to be planning international jaunts at present.

Americans reported the biggest influence on the decision whether to buy travel insurance was the price, cited by 65% of survey respondents. Having a flexible/customizable policy is the factor that weighs the second heaviest when making travel insurance decisions, followed by a transparent policy and customer service, according to battleface.

While many are looking into or buying travel insurance, around two-fifths report being unaware that travel insurance is mandatory in certain countries, including Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, and Turks and Caicos. However, 60% said these requirements wouldn’t stop them from overseas travel. Further, 65% said it was “fairly or very likely” they would purchase additional travel insurance.

When it comes to international travel, Mexico is the most popular destination for Americans, followed by the Bahamas, Italy, Canada and Germany, according to battleface.

In addition to adventurous travel, seeking culture was the second most cited reason for a trip. This was trailed by relaxation and visiting friends and family.

“After so many Americans experienced abrupt changes to their travel plans last year, resulting in major losses in investments that they likely planned on for months or even years, travelers are savvier when it comes to protecting their valuable travel plans,” Sasha Gainullin, CEO of battleface, said in a release.
