Propelled forward by contemporary political issues (and personalities) and the rise of social justice activism over the last year or so, the issue of diversity in employment has risen to the top of corporate agendas and training programs. The P&C insurance industry is squarely in the middle of recent work to improve workplace equity and inclusion, as shown by the number of P&C insurance employers included in the Forbes list of "America's Best Employers for Diversity in 2021." The slideshow above illustrates the P&C insurance companies that made this esteemed list. Exactly what makes a diverse workplace? As many industry events this year have illuminated, it means more than simply hiring racial, ethnic and social minorities — a challenge in and of itself. Companies that truly embrace diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) as a pillar of their corporate culture are writing that language into every aspect of their work and image. They are training people at all levels to recognize and correct biases in behaviors and programs. And they are empowering people of all creeds to succeed and rise within the ranks. "Diversity is not sitting at the campfire signing 'Kumbaya' or holding hands singing Queen Latifah's rendition of 'U.N.I.T.Y,' author and consultant Justin Jones-Fosu writes in his book "The Inclusive Mindset." "The goal of real diversity is not that we will always agree, but rather that when we disagree, I can still respect you.
