The global business community came to grasps with the true value of resiliency during the past year as supply chains were rocked, political tensions ratcheted up and climate worries rose. With 2020 in the rearview, Denmark came out ranked as the most resilient nation, according to FM Global's 2021 Resilience Index. The index, which rates 130 countries and territories, takes into account 12 objective measures that highlight a region's economic, risk quality and supply chain conditions, the commercial property insurance company reported. Scores are based on a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 representing the lowest resilience and 100 being the highest resilience. "Over the years, leanness, speed and short-term profit have often reigned as primary concerns of global businesses," Eric Jones, vice president, global manager, business risk consulting at FM Global, said in a release. "But the historic events of 2020 reminded the world that these qualities are subordinate to the ability to resist, rebound from or operate through lockdowns, demonstrations and climate-related disruptions. Resilience has always affected a company's total value, and this past year's events brought this imperative into sharp relief." The U.S. region 1, which encompasses the Eastern and Southeastern states, fell seven spots to land at 17 in 2021's ranking. The region fell in the ranking for natural hazard exposure due to new earthquake risk data. It also dropped in the political risk ranking as a result of "partisan acrimony and heightened conflict over social justice issues," FM Global reported. Moving from 21 slots up in the ranking to land at 63, Ukraine saw the most improvement in resiliency. The country improved in multiple measures including natural hazard risk exposure, inherent cyber risk and control of corruption. Seeing the largest decline was Oman, which fell from 57 to 69 in the ranking. The nation saw steep drops in economic productivity and oil intensity ratings. For the first time, Iran entered the bottom of the list, ranking 128th. The country dropped 14 spots in the productivity category and seven positions in the political risk sector. Venezuela and Haiti round out the bottom three countries. The above slideshow highlights the most resilient nations, according to FM Global's 2021 ranking. Related: |
