CNA & Marsh appoint new leaders to lead their legal teams
Two giants in the insurance and risk management space announced major changes in their legal departments.
Several major staffing changes will affect the legal teams at CNA Insurance and Marsh and will become effective in June.
CNA Insurance has pulled its next general counsel from the legal department of New York-based Marsh McLennan’s insurance arm. Taking over as CNA’s GC on June 28 is Susan Stone, who had been general counsel of Marsh LLC, Marsh McLennan’s insurance broking and risk management business.
In addition, Marsh McLennan announced two promotions in the legal department. Katherine Brennan, who was deputy general counsel and corporate secretary of Marsh McLennan, has been named general counsel of Marsh LLC. And taking over Brennan’s former role as chief corporate counsel and assistant secretary Connor Kuratek. Both promotions become effective June 1.
At Chicago-based CNA, Stone will report to chairman and CEO Dino E. Robusto. Before joining CNA, Stone was a partner, executive committee member and practice group leader at Sidley Austin.
“Susan is eminently skilled, bringing over three decades of extensive legal experience to the role,” Robusto said in a statement Monday. “In addition, her proven track record at leading varied teams, fostering collaborative relationships with government and industry trade organizations, and building collaborative business partnerships will ensure that we continue to profitably grow our business with full integrity.”
At Marsh LLC, Brennan will report to Marsh CEO John Doyle and Marsh McLennan general counsel Peter Beshar.
“I have had the privilege of working with Kate in her current role at Marsh McLennan and know firsthand that she is an outstanding lawyer with sound judgment who knows our business well. Her experience working across a variety of complex regulatory, legal and compliance matters in our industry will make her a strong addition to the Marsh leadership team,” Doyle said in a press release.
Brennan became deputy general counsel and chief compliance officer at Marsh McLennan in 2017. She previously served as deputy general counsel of S&P Global. She has also served as general counsel of Guy Carpenter. From 2008 to 2013, she was at Marsh McLennan and served as senior corporate counsel and corporate secretary. Before going in-house, Brennan worked as an associate at Dewey & LeBouf.
Kuratek will succeed Brennan and will also report directly to Beshar. Kuratek has been with Marsh McLennan since 2016 and served as chief corporate counsel overseeing securities and as assistant secretary. Before moving in-house he was an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell.
