A new analysis from WalletHub studied car insurance rates across the country, determining the average annual premium in each state. Researchers ranked all 50 states from least to most expensive. The results highlight a significant range in costs across the country. Drivers in the most expensive state, for example, pay an average of $1,634 more per year on auto insurance premiums than the least expensive state in 2021. In their analysis, WalletHub researchers broke down the factors that influence insurance rates, including age, gender, marital status, mileage, coverage level and driving record. Among the top cost considerations, on average nationally, full coverage policies cost insureds 178% more than minimum coverage policies. DUIs will hike rates by about 103%, and a suspended license will cost about the same, carrying a 97% increase on average.
