Insurance Speak: Risks to watch in 2021

A conversation with Allianz’s Rani Christie highlights multiple risks insurers are watching around the globe.

Risk management is an essential aspect of any business — identifying risks and mitigating them through preparation, by sharing the risk or purchasing insurance coverage is important. But none of this can be accomplished without first identifying some of the key threats to anticipate.

The 2021 Allianz Risk Barometer surveyed almost 3,000 respondents in 92 countries and territories and 22 industry sectors, and the findings indicate many risks are not unique to a certain market or country. To explain what businesses should be anticipating this year, the latest Insurance Speak podcast features a conversation with Rani Christie, regional head of distribution, sales and marketing for Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty.

The survey identifies the three leading risks as the COVID trio: Business interruption, the pandemic and cyber incidents. Rani shares that businesses have suffered business interruption losses in the past, but these risks have shown the need to prepare for a broader range of exposures.

Rani also provides insights on cyber risks, the impact of climate change on environmental hazards such as wildfires and hurricanes, and how insurance carriers are assessing them now. She also highlights some of the issues surrounding the work-from-home environment as employees continue working virtually.
