The national average for annual home insurance costs is $1,445, but premiums vary widely by state, according to ValuePenguin.com, which notes the least expensive state sees annual costs below $600. While rates vary, overall, the cost of home insurance has been increasing, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, which reported gains of nearly 47% during the past decade. Getting a better overview of the national picture, ValuePeguin.com gathered home insurance quotes for every residential ZIP code in the country from the largest homeowners insurance companies in every state, then found the average of each state. The results of the most and least expensive states are highlighted in the above slideshow. The main factors that affect home insurance cost are its location, state laws, how much the dwelling is covered for, and how susceptible it is to damage, according to ValuePeguin. For example, homes along the coast would have higher insurance costs than landlocked houses, while a house built with expensive or fragile materials would cost more than one made with more affordable or study materials.
