Excellence in customer service, claims and pricing were noticed by consumers surveyed by Insure.com, which conducted a poll to uncover the top-rated personal auto insurance providers. The survey found that while cheap rates are attractive to shoppers, high-quality service and quick claims payments are keys to retention. Additionally, the top-rated companies' renewal rates were typically 95% or higher. Client retention became critical during the past year, as the pandemic forced around 40% of U.S. consumers to reduce or eliminate an insurance policy. Auto coverage was the second-most impacted line when it came to consumers cutting or reducing coverage. "Quality customer service is just as important as price," Penny Gusner, senior consumer analyst for Insure.com, said in a release. "Prices are competitive and easy to check, but policyholders say what's most important to them is customer service, and excellent customer service is the main reason why they stay with their company. Wanting to renew coverage with their company and recommending it to others are key markers of customer satisfaction." Noting that not all drivers are the same, Insure.com dug into the survey results to find the following companies that are best suited for specific driving profiles. |

  • Best value for price: Geico
  • Best for discounts: American Family
  • Best for customer happiness: Auto-Owners
  • Best for young adults and college students: Progressive
  • Best for AARP members/senior drivers: The Hartford
  • Best for military: USAA

The above slideshow reveals the five highest-ranking personal auto insurers, based on a survey of more than 3,200 U.S. consumers conducted by Insure.com. Related: |
