The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recently released its annual motorcycle theft report that illuminates why bikers must remain vigilant to protect their two-wheeled possessions despite declining thefts across the U.S. According to the report, motorcycle thefts have decreased by 12% since 2016. In total, 40,380 motorcycle thefts across 478 different makes were reported in 2019 — the earliest data available — down from 41,674 in 2018. Another good news revealed in the report is the rate of recovery: 18,857 motorcycles that were reported stolen in 2019 have been recovered at a recovery rate of 46%

The NICB's report also found that some states see more cases of motorcycle thefts: California was the top-ranked state with 6,913 reported incidents in 2019, followed by Florida with 4,085 thefts, and Texas with 3,165 thefts. Additionally, Missouri had the largest increase in motorcycle thefts year-over-year, while New York had the largest decrease. To prevent motorcycles from being stolen, the NICB recommends owners take the following steps: |

• Purchase motorcycles from reputable manufacturers or dealers, and avoid custom or "assembled" bikes when purchasing from a private party.
• Before purchasing from a private party, take the motorcycle to a local dealership for inspection first. Also, consider purchasing a vehicle history report.
• It's best to perform private transactions in a safe environment. The NICB suggests going to a local law enforcement station, as many agencies have "safe areas" for private parties to complete deals.
• Do not turn over the motorcycle title until funds have cleared the bank.
• Remove the key and lock the motorcycle even when stored in a secured locked area, such as a garage. It is also wise to invest in aftermarket lock(s) or a theft-deterrent system with tracking capabilities.
• Do not store the title in a motorcycle compartment.
• Take photos of the motorcycle and place unique markings on the bike to help identify it if it is ever stolen.
