Insurance Speak: An inside look at the IICF

The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation provides insurers with numerous ways to serve local communities beyond providing insurance.

When disasters occur, the public relies on insurance companies to help cover the costs of returning them to some measure of viability. From car accidents and work-related injuries to recovering from perils like hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and floods, policyholders expect their insurance to be their first financial line of defense for recovery.

What many may not be aware of are the other ways in which insurers and their employees serve policyholders and communities. The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) is one of the premier vehicles that facilitates these efforts. In this edition of Insurance Speak, Melissa-Anne Duncan, executive director of the Western Division of IICF, takes us inside the organization, which has been serving communities since 1994.

IICF comprises the Northeast, Midwest and Western divisions as well as locations in the U.K., and focuses on a host of programs to enrich the local communities in these jurisdictions. The organization partners with companies such as AIG, AON, Assurant, AXA, CHUBB, CNA, EY, Farmers Insurance, Opportunity Hub, Lloyd’s, Mayer|Brown, Munich Re, Swiss Re, The Hartford and Zurich to positively impact local areas.

While IICF provides year-round volunteering opportunities, since 1998 it has focused on an annual Week of Giving (October 10-17) as a way to highlight the many projects it supports. Since COVID-19 has affected these efforts like many other endeavors, the organization has created several ways for insurers to volunteer locally. These include using diverse skill sets to mentor and teach children virtually, tutoring children in different classes, using knowledge of a second language to translate vital information and several other unique serving opportunities that can be remote or in-person.

The IICF has raised over $40 million in funding across the U.S. and the U.K. and provided hundreds of thousands of hours to serve local communities over the last 25 years.
