On Sept. 30, Sedwick announced the latest promotion as part of the company’s planned succession process and global growth plan.

Jim Ryan will move into the newly created role of chief operating officer for the Americas, overseeing operations across all of Sedgwick’s business lines in Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States. With more than 25 years of experience, Ryan has particular expertise in workers’ compensation, liability and litigation.

“Since joining Sedgwick in 2011, Jim has proven himself to be an exceptional leader who has an unwavering commitment to our caring counts® philosophy,” said Mike Arbour, CEO of Sedgwick, in a statement. “During Jim’s tenure as president of casualty operations, our solutions have continued to expand, which is a testament to his skill and ability to drive us toward future growth.

In a statement, Ryan expressed his enthusiasm for “sharing my experiences and continuing to support the needs of Sedgwick’s operations across the Americas.”

At a time when diversity is center stage in the insurance industry, Sedgwick’s recent top-level hirings and promotions fail to move away from the ‘white male’ characteristics that permeate boardrooms across the industry. Just one woman was recently appointed to Sedgwick’s U.S. leadership since mid-August, while five males experienced career moves at the company during the same period. Nevertheless, the company asserts that it supports and promotes women and diversity among its leadership, stating that its ”talent management team is well-versed in ways to avoid unconscious bias and ensure those job roles are not inflated to keep women or minorities out.”
