Images out of Napa Valley this week depict a bleak but familiar scene, as two major wildfires continue to burn across Napa and Sonoma Counties. More than 70,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate the area since fires first broke out Sunday (Sept. 27). Since then, the named Glass Fire has exploded in size, burning 42,560 acres at last count Tuesday (Sept. 29) evening, and destroying at least 80 buildings that include homes and wineries. Further north in Shasta County, the Zogg Fire has burned more than 40,000 acres, destroyed 146 structures, and threatens another 1,538, according to Cal Fire. At least three people have been killed in the fires. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Monday night. As of Tuesday evening, both fires were 0% contained. It's been another historic wildfire season for California so far. After consecutive record-breaking loss years, the 2020 season has already brought the most heat yet, producing five of the now six largest wildfires in California history. The fires aren't over yet, and early images out of Napa and Sonoma Counties depict significant property damage and complete losses of homes and businesses. View these photos in the slideshow above.
