WSIA to continue offering virtual education sessions
The organization's fall 2020 education programs will all be presented virtually across multiple days.
As the realities of the global coronavirus pandemic began to unfold, the Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association (WSIA) began to transition its education programs to the digital space while ensuring that the full slate of options remains available to the organization’s members.
This year, WSIA’s fall education opportunities will all be presented virtually and are scheduled so that content is spread across portions of multiple days. This will allow members to participate from the convenience of their homes or offices with all the same content that they have come to expect during on-site programs.
Education programs are a benefit of membership for all employees of WSIA member firms, and the association provides a comprehensive schedule for new and seasoned professionals. These programs are progressive in nature so that members can gain both technical training and strategic leadership skills and are appropriately challenged through every phase of their wholesale, specialty and surplus lines careers.

Effective Coaching November 2 & 5, 2020 Register online by October 23
Who should attend?
- All surplus lines managers who want to become effective leaders and strengthen their coaching abilities.
- Surplus lines managers whose team members attended WSIA’s Consultative Selling and Negotiations.
What to expect
- Two days of coaching on business transactions in the surplus lines industry customized for your own coaching style. Prior to training, participants complete a behavior-based survey to assess and improve specific areas of strengths and habits during the education program.
- Learn how to leverage the difference between managing and coaching.
- Incorporate new ways to hold your team members accountable and create measurable objectives to assess outcomes.
- Improve your team environment and motivate and empower individual performers.
- Taught by Richardson, a global sales training and performance company, using custom content developed in cooperation with WSIA.
Marcus Payne Advanced E&S November 9-12, 2020 Register online by October 30
Who should attend?
- Insurance professionals with multiple years of experience in the surplus lines industry who are ready to explore more advanced E&S topics.
- Past participants of WSIA’s Excess & Surplus Lines program, though there is no prerequisite.
What to expect
- Four days of facilitated virtual learning using Zoom, including presentations led by E&S executives, classroom discussion, case study breakouts and networking.
- E&S topics, including the broker and underwriter relationship, surplus lines marketplace players, industry standards and procedures, stamping offices, reinsurance, financial information, and claims.
- Executive panel featuring WSIA member professionals providing wisdom and insight into the industry.
Consultative Selling and Negotiations November 16, 18-19, 2020 Register online by November 6
Who should attend?
- Brokers, MGAs or underwriters who transact business and have relationships with clients.
What to expect
- New virtual schedule taught by a Richardson instructor via video teleconference in a three-day format with built-in breaks that allows you to interact with the instructor and peers.
- Study the sales and negotiation process looking at types of client relationships, styles, perspectives and even your own individual habits and strategies.
- Walk through the steps to prepare for the transactional process, understanding the importance of dialogue.
- Develop an action plan to understand better and improve your current and future client relationships.
