A new state insurance regulator panel will be looking at how it should address matters related to race, diversity, inclusion and fairness in the insurance sector.

The Special Committee on Race and Insurance, an arm of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), is preparing to hold a two-hour open meeting starting at 2 p.m. Eastern Time on Sept. 17.

The NAIC plans to stream the committee meeting live on the web.

Special committee members have developed a list of charges that includes analyzing the level of diversity and inclusion in the insurance industry and talking to a wide range of people about issues related to race, diversity, and inclusion in the insurance industry. The committee also will examine barriers that could “potentially disadvantage people of color and/or historically underrepresented groups,” while giving the NAIC ideas about how to address such issues.

The committee is supposed to provide recommendations for the property and casualty sector as well as health insurance and life and annuity sectors.

The special committee is inviting interested parties to send in written statements about race-related issues, and about which issues state insurance regulators should tackle first.

Written comments on the special committee’s work can be sent to Andy Beal at abeal@naic.org by Sept. 10.
