Why might a driver choose to use their own car or truck for business purposes over a commercial fleet vehicle? The simplest response: Flexibility. The rise of gig-economy taxi and food-delivery services means millions of people worldwide now rely on their personal vehicles to make money. Consider that Uber is estimated to have as many as 111 million users worldwide, according to Statista, and that its chief competitor, Lyft, operates in more than 640 cities in the United States and a dozen more in Canada. But there also are more subtle reasons why individual auto insurance policyholders might prefer to conduct business with their own vehicles, like the fact that fleet vehicles are sometimes viewed as being less fuel-efficient or less safe than personal cars and trucks, according to Motus, the workforce management company that produces fleet management software. Another issue that may factor into whether or not insureds decide to use their own vehicles to make money is the cost of business-use auto insurance where they live. CarData Consultants Inc. recently surveyed such costs to determine whether various company VRPs (Vehicle Reimbursement Programs) are responsive to regional insurance distinctions.
