Summertime brings some of the worst weather months of the year in the U.S. as hurricane season collides with peak-wildfire season leading into the fall. After several consecutive record-breaking catastrophe loss years, the forecast for 2020 doesn't provide any relief for homeowners in at-risk areas or insurers, as it is presently on pace to be the most disaster-heavy year ever. As of June 1, FEMA has declared more disasters this year than any other except 2011. Extreme weather affects all regions of the U.S., but some states are left paying for significantly more of the cost than most. In a recent study conducted by ValuePenguin, 10 states are left paying for more than 80% of the cost of natural disasters in the United States, with damage particularly concentrated along the Gulf Coast. According to ValuePenguin's research, the financial impact of natural disasters in the hardest-hit state cost residents an average of $1,478 per household over the last five years. The most costly weather events continue to be hurricanes and flooding, but wildfires have made a bigger impact over the previous five years than in the past. In the slideshow above, discover the 10 states most at-risk of natural disasters in 2020, according to ValuePenguin. Related: |
