For more than 130 years, motorcycles have embodied freedom, independence and the spirit of exploration. Just consider these words from the actor Dan Aykroyd of "Ghostbusters" fame: "You do not need a therapist if you own a motorcycle!" But, like any piece of machinery, motorcycles come with risks, and those risks can translate into practical expenses for motorcycle lovers. "Motorcycle riders are over-represented in traffic fatalities," according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrative. Nearly 5,000 motorcyclists were killed in accidents in 2018, but only 71% of bikers reportedly wore helmets that year, the NHTSA says. Choosing to ride a motorcycle is risky, but that shouldn't mean that lovers of open-air transportation should also have to pay the proverbial 'arm and a leg' to insure their bikes. Where they live could make a big difference. Some — but not all — of the most picturesque places in the United States also are the most expensive places to insure motorcycles, according to a recent survey by ValuePenguin.com. The consumer-finance comparison site reported that the average price for a full year of motorcycle coverage in the U.S. is $702. Take a look at the slideshow above to find out which 10 states outpace the national average the most for the cost of motorcycle insurance. Related: |
