Editor’s Note: This week’s question looks at the confusion policyholders face when evaluating what’s indicated on the declarations page and what a policy actually covers.

Question: Our insured suffered water damage when the kitchen garbage disposal broke and water-saturated the cabinets. A water restoration company was called that said the cabinets will need to be replaced.

The insured has an HO1 policy that says water damage is covered in the declarations page, but the insurer’s adjuster says water damage is not covered by the policy

Analysis: The declaration page contains a lot of information about a policy, such as the name of the insured, coverage amount, and general coverages. But it does not provide detailed coverage information. When a declaration page says something is included in the policy, it does not guarantee that every loss is covered. The policy still must be reviewed in order to know what the coverages or exclusions are.
