Every driver knows that certain cars will cost more to insure than others. The year and model of the vehicle are significant factors when insurers determine insurance rates, but they are not the only considerations. A recent analysis by Insure.com of the most and least expensive vehicles to insure in 2020 noted that "the target audience, sticker price, repair costs and safety features incorporated in a vehicle absolutely impact the cost of insurance." Notably, vehicles designed with families in mind tend to come with safety features, which is why SUVs and CUVs made up much of its list of least expensive cars to insure. It also mentions that how popular a vehicle is can lower insurance as more sales lead to lower repair costs because parts are readily available. This ties into the point related to vehicle popularity as automakers are "ridding their lineups of sedans and diverting investment to S.U.V.s and crossovers," according to The New York Times. To find the least expensive cars to insure in 2020, Insure.com commissioned Quadrant Information Services to calculate average auto insurance rates for 2020 models. Averages were calculated using data from six large carriers, such as Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, Nationwide, Progressive and State Farm, in 10 ZIP codes per state. A full description of the methodology can be found here. In the slideshow above, discover which new models made the list of the 22 least expensive cars to insure in 2020, ranked by Insure.com.
