Saying that social media plays an important role in people’s lives is not an exaggeration. Almost half of the world’s population are social media users now. It is a central part of the lives and daily routines for many people.

As social media continues to grow so should your social marketing plan. One of your strategic goals should be to build a stronger, more engaged audience.

But why do you as an insurance agency need to focus on social media marketing? We have already established that it is where the people are. But it is also a great way to separate yourself from your competition and outperform them.

Staying on top of social media trends is the best way to meet your objectives. Here are four social media trends for your agency to tap into in 2020.

1. Ephemeral content

Ephemeral content is rich media that is only available for a short period of time. Instagram Stories are a perfect example of this type of content. Stories are short, engaging and they tap into the fear of missing out. The number of daily active users has continued to grow since its introduction.

Has your agency tried the Stories feature on Instagram or Facebook? If not, you might want to consider adding it to your toolbox for this year. Try adding a poll or asking your followers a question to drive engagement.

2. Private groups

We have seen several data breaches this past year. In fact, 2019 was the worst year on record for security breaches. It is no surprise there is a growing concern over data privacy and security. Many users turn to private groups for content because of these worries.

3. Video content

If content is king, then video is its crown.

Video is one of the most engaging forms of content. It makes information more digestible and easier to understand. Seventy-eight percent of people are watching videos online each week and 55%of them watch daily. It is clear to see video is the undeniable winner over other types of content.

Now is the time to include video in your content strategy if you’re not already creating it. It doesn’t matter if you focus on short-form videos that are popular on Stories or the long-form you see on YouTube. What matters is that you start using video content to stay relevant.

4. Local targeting

Local targeting is the social media counterpart for local SEO. Is your agency looking to drive more organic traffic? Then location-based targeting is a trend you want to try out in 2020.

One way to reach a local audience is by geotagging your posts and stories. Adding a location to your social media content will help it reach a local audience. Geotargeting works particularly well with promoted posts or tweets. For instance, if you boost a post on Facebook you can also select the locations you want to target. Facebook will then show your posts to users in those areas.

These are a few of the social media trends we can expect to see grow in 2020. Consider including at least one of these trends in your social media strategy for the new year.
