Everything cybersecurity-related has become mainstream — especially in the property & casualty insurance industry — as technology has become intertwined with nearly everything we, as a society, interact with. While this change has been positive in many aspects, data breaches and other cyberattacks continue to be a significantly negative downside. Data breaches, in particular, have only gotten worse. Of the 15 largest data breaches in history, 10 took place in the 2010s, according to Business Insider. To counter the growing number of data breaches, regulations like the European Union's (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act were implemented. Both aim to protect user's privacy and data and penalize organizations that fail to do so. For businesses that operate on a global scale, as many in the P&C insurance industry do, this has meant adapting business practices to adhere to these regulations in order to avoid fines, reputational loss, class-action lawsuits and much more. For countries in the EU that are beholden to GDPR's wide scope, there is still a lot of room for improvement. DLA Piper's latest GDPR Data Breach Survey found that over 160,000 data breach notifications have been reported across the 28 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. The survey highlighted the level of GDPR data breaches across the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) between May 25, 2018, and Jan. 27, 2020. With this in mind, explore our slideshow above to see the countries with the most GDPR data breaches from May 25, 2018, to Jan. 27, 2020, per EEA jurisdiction (the 28 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein).
