Recently released data from the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) showcases earthquake insurance uptake and premiums in the U.S. within the past few years. Among the data, I.I.I. reports that earthquake insurance direct premiums written rose 9.2% to $3.1 billion in 2018 from $2.9 billion in 2017. California accounted for the largest portion of earthquake premiums in 2018 at $1.9 billion — 60% of the total earthquake insurance premiums written in the U.S. Despite being a billion-dollar market, only 11% of homeowners said they had earthquake insurance, according to a November 2018 poll by I.I.I.
