One could speculate why a car owner would get rid of a new car within the first year of use. Maybe insurance rates are too high? Or it could be they prefer the latest model on the market. Research firm and car search engine iSeeCars.com set out to uncover trends behind car owners giving up new vehicles. After analyzing more than 46 million new car sales, iSeeCars discovered ten car models that were resold more than 2.5 times the average within the first year and with at least 1,000 miles on the odometer. Luxury brands dominate the list, despite their consumer appeal. iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly explained how one popular automaker's cars "generally have below-average reliability ratings from Consumer Reports, which could contribute to why owners get rid of them so quickly." Other reasons such as high operating costs, low fuel-economy ratings, and a lack of safety features and technology could also contribute to owners wanting to off-load newly-purchased cars, says iSeeCars. Methodology

From July 2013 to December 2018, iSeeCars.com analyzed more than 46 million individual new car sales for model years 2014-2017. Utilizing each car's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), iSeeCars determined whether the vehicle was then re-listed and then resold between four months to a year of its original sale date. The analysis excluded used cars with fewer than 1000 miles, models not in production as of the 2018 model year, heavy-duty trucks and vans, and low-volume models. See also: |
