To commemorate its 125th anniversary as a national trade association next year, the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies has launched a new scholarship fundraising campaign through the NAMIC Mutual Insurance Foundation to support students seeking undergraduate degrees in insurance and risk management.

Association membership has been challenged to raise $125,000 by the end of 2020, which is more than double the amount of scholarships granted last year.

“The goal of this challenge is two-fold — to financially support deserving college students as they pursue insurance and risk management education and to help address the rising demand for talent in the industry in the coming years,” Randy Druvenga, NAMIC’s new chairman and president of First Maxfield Mutual Insurance Association, explained in a statement. “By achieving these objectives, members will help students not only fund their education toward an insurance career but will also strengthen service to mutual company policyholders through a qualified and readily available workforce.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be U.S. citizens and plan to find permanent employment in the North American insurance industry. Winners will be announced at the NAMIC Annual Convention held in Boston next September, and the award will be paid directly to the schools the scholarship recipients will attend in fall 2020 or fall 2021.

“We appreciate the colleges and universities that offer insurance programs and degrees to their students,” said Chuck Chamness, NAMIC’s president and CEO, in a release, “and we applaud those students who have elected insurance as their field of study; they have made a wise choice as insurance — and especially mutual insurance — offers rewarding career opportunities while serving people in times of hardship and need.

To apply, students must complete an online application, which will open on Jan. 31, 2020, and upload all required documents by March 31, 2020. Applications will be reviewed, and scholarship recipients will be notified by mail no later than May 1, 2020.
